Sniatyn, Galicia Help

I don’t have many readers of my blog for obvious reasons. If you aren’t somehow related to me, chances are that nothing in my blog would matter too much. That’s OK with me.

So, when one of my readers asks me a favor, I figure I pretty much have to comply. Reader Gary asked if I could post some of his pictures and that MAYBE someone somewhere would recognize some of the people in them.

Here’s the first picture:

25 Aug 1935

Sniatyn 25 Aug 1935

Some comments on this picture by Gary:

GW-03: August 25, 1935 (or just prior to), Sniatyn, Poland – Not sure what this group photo is acknowledging, but would like to learn more if anyone can provide a better identification. My father, Nathan Werner is in the top right position. On the reverse side of this photo the pencil descriptions are barely readable. The best I can make out is that the names of some others in this photo may be: Schaffer, Benson, Eldel and other unreadables.

Picture Number two:

Werner Zionist Group Sniatyn

And some more comments by Gary:

GW-04: Zionist Youth Group in Sniatyn. The sign reads “For eternal memory on the occaision of the aliyah of the traditional group the ‘Over Group’ to the land of Israel. Choldah Hochman. My father Natan Werner is sitting in the front row right side. On the reverse side of this photo is the photographer’s stamp – L. Schmitzler.

So, if anyone has any further information about or about the people in these pictures, please post a comment and I’ll get the information to Gary.

I am just beginning my genealogy journey. Could you tell me where and how to research church records in the town of Sniatyn, Ukraine from the mid 1800′s to early 1900′s. I have some names and dates for my family. All your help will be greatly appreciated.

      Hi,

The first thing you need to do is figure out what religion your ancestors were in Sniatyn. Each religion recorded their own birth(baptism), marriage and death records. If you can figure that out it will save some time looking through film. In any event, here are the steps:

      1) Go to http://www.familysearch.org
      2) click on Library Catalog
      3) Do a place name search on “Austria, Galizien, Śniatyn (Śniatyn)” ( you don’t need the special characters)
      4) Click on church records
      5) There will be listings for: Catholic, Greek Catholic, Armenian, Evangelical ( Lutheran I think) Metrical books.
      6) Choose a religion :-) and click on the heading
      7) Print what you see
      8) Take the printout to the nearest Family History Center and pay to get a copy.

When the copy of the film arrives, load it in a reader and start looking. I’ve been looking at catholic and Greek catholic and most of it is in Latin. I’ve found the book “Polish Roots” by Rosemary Chorzempa to be very helpful with reading the records.

Good luck! Let me know if you need more help and especially let me know what you find!

      Steve

I’m interested in the family name Kowerda. Galicia and Sniatyn, Poland has surfaced on my grandfathers information. He was born in 1890. When he married here in the states, my grandparents were married at an Ukrainian Catholic Church but he attended the Orthodox Ukrainian church and my grandmother a Catholic Church during their lifetime. Anything you share with me will be a great joy. I don’t have much information.

        Hi Judy,

I don’t remember seeing that last name, but then I haven’t been looking for it. If I run into Kowerda while researching, I’ll certainly pass any information I find along. I’d highly recommend getting a copy of the microfilm through the LDS though and have a look your on your own.

Do you know if there is a Lutheran Church in Sniatyn and if they hold the records for the years 1870 to 1940? The LDS does not have these records and the Daum Files do not cover this city.
    Thank You

      Hi Maggie,

I think the Lutheran records for Sniatyn are available from the LDS. Try searching on film number: 2380002 on familysearch.org. Looks like it’s 1843-1900.

Good luck and let me know what you find.

        Hi Maggie,

I’m not sure what the next option is besides hiring someone in the Ukraine to do some research for you. I don’t have any direct experience doing that though. I’ve thought about it quite a bit, but have never taken the plunge.

Again, let me know what you decide to do and how it turns out,

        Steve
